DAMAC Owner Hussain Sajwani had a joyous occasion not long ago where he hosted and entertained some of the most distinguished guests at the wedding of his daughter Amira. Those guests included the UAE’s royal family with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his family as well as members of US President Trump’s family. President Trump and the first lady could not be in attendance, but Eric and Donald Jr. were happy to be there for the celebration and even took part in photo ops with the Hussain Sajwani family. The Sajwani family and Trump family have really helped Dubai’s tourism market thrive through their partnership, but for the DAMAC owner it began years before he knew the Trumps.
Hussain Sajwani became a billionaire real estate investor after spending the first part of his career in catering and logistics. He is a graduate of the University of Washington and he started his professional career as a contracts manager for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and then raised his own capital to start managing food shipments on the side. The catering company generated millions of dollars over the years, and eventually Hussain Sajwani used the funds from that company to invest in real estate.
It was several smaller hotels and housing properties that Hussain Sajwani started out with before he started seeing big returns come in, and in 2002 he took it to a large scale as he founded DAMAC Properties and its subsidiaries. He also founded DICO Investments which has invested in private equity over the years, and the cash reserves were built up for the company that have kept it out of debt. Sajwani’s properties started with Marina Terrace in 2003, added several other lots along the Dubai Canal, AKOYA Oxygen, DAMAC Hills, DAMAC Tower and the Trump Estates. Hussain Sajwani and President Trump became close friends as they realized they had so much in common with how they viewed the markets and what they wanted to see accomplished. The Trump International Golf Club and Trump World Resort are the two latest projects to land in DAMAC’s portfolio though a beach resort in Maldives is also in the works.
