Dr. Mark Holterman, Pediatric Hero

Dr. Mark Holterman is a professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He has over two decades of surgical experience and is currently serving as a pediatric surgeon at the Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital of Illinois, St. Francis Medical Center. Though Dr. Mark Holterman specializes in pediatric surgery, his interests include research into stem cell therapies, regenerative medicine, obesity and cancer treatments.

 

Dr. Mark Holterman graduated from Yale University, majoring in biology. He then pursued his Ph.D. and MD from the University of Virginia. Dr. Mark Holterman completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia, also a pediatric fellowship through the University of Washington. Adding to his experience, Dr. Holterman served as surgeon-in-chief at Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital. He also served as attending pediatric surgeon at Rush University Medical Center.

Besides his extensive professional credentials, Dr. Mark Holterman is involved in several charitable organizations. One organization Dr. Holterman supports in the International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam (IPSAC-VN). The organization is dedicated to assisting healthcare professionals in Vietnam to have access to pediatric surgery and care.

 

Dr. Mark Holterman is also a member of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ADA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research of treatment, research, education, and prevention of diabetes.

 

Notably, Dr. Mark Holterman is one of the minds behind the creation of the Hannah Sunshine Foundation (DialDish). The Hannah Sunshine Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on the research and use of regenerative cell therapies for children with rare diseases.

 

Dr. Mark Holterman has received many awards and accolades. He was co-surgeon in the first successful trachea transplant in a 32-month old Korean child. He was also awarded the Innovated Research Award from the American Diabetes Association. He also received recognition as one of the nation’s top doctors, and recipient of the Castle-Connolly National Merit Scholarship.

 

Dr. Mark Holterman has not only succeeded in his profession as a pediatric surgeon and professor but also contributes to the humanitarian efforts of medical science with a passion for pediatrics and regenerative cellular therapies.
