Robert Ivy: First Architect To Win Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award

Recently Retrofit Magazine recently published the article “Robert Ivy, FAIA Will Receive a Lifetime Achievement Award”. The article discusses the CEO of EVP of the American Institute of Architects and his recent win of the lifetime achievement award.

The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters awarded Robert Ivy with the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award. The prestigious award was developed to honor living artists and patrons of the arts. Other winners of the award include Walter Anderson, Leontyne Price, Eudora Welty and Morgan Freeman.

The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters stated that Robert Ivy is a necessary part to making architecture accessible to the general populace. He is an author, writer and commentator on architecture throughout the world and deserves recognition for it. Ivy has been the CEO of the American Institute of Architects for more than seven years and acts as an ambassador for architects around the world. Through his leadership, the American Institute of Architects has grown its influence to the international stage. It now has seven different chapters around the world including the recent additions of Canada and China. Ivy previously led McGraw-Hill’s Architectural Record as the editor-in-chief. Under his leadership, the Architectural Record gained many different awards including the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. Under his leadership, he expanded the construction media magazine to cover the architectural growth in China and in the Middle East.

He has also been given the designation as the Master Architect. The designation has only been given to seven architects throughout Alpha Rho Chi’s century long history. The national architecture fraternity wanted to honor Ivy’s ability to communicate the importance and value of architecture and design to the general public. He has also received the Dean’s Medal from Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. He received the award in 2017.

Retrofit Magazine was not the only one to notice the CEO’s recent achievement. Contract Design also recently published an article titled “Robert Ivy Receives Noel Polk Lifetime Award”. The article, written by Will Speros reveals that this is the first time the award has been given to an architect. He indicates that Ivy has continued to expand the influence of the American Institute of Architects, which now has the highest membership recorded in its 160-year history.

Robert Ivy earned his B.A. from Sewanee: The University of the South. He received an M.A. in Architecture from Tulane University.
